Writers. The ultimate creators of this play are the boys of Vedem, based on the brave lives they chose to live to their fullest under cruel circumstances. Though the work is one of historical fiction, everything that is said and done by the characters in the play were inspired by actual residents of Terezin Concentration Camp - including the 15,000 children who called the transit camp home. While most young people would not survive the war, their stories and art (literary, musical, dramatic, and visual), live on thanks to all those who honor their legacy by remembering them - audience members included. Steve Fisher, along with contributing writer Ellen Manowitz, are proud to be co-authors of The Last Boy with the boys of Vedem. They are profoundly honored to be vessels for this important story of hate and the hope to rise above it.

Director. Steve has been a storyteller since at least age 5, when he declared to the neighborhood kids that his backyard had been selected as the site of the carnival coming to town. The whole notion was just too dramatic not to announce at the nightly "kick the can" gathering during that summer of 1973. Even though the story line was historical fiction, it got him a lot of attention. Middle child syndrome is real. Serendipitously, Steve moved away a week before the supposed opening day. (Successful theatre has always been about timing.) Other early directorial credits include the annual Thanksgiving play performed in Steve's basement after dinner for an audience of family members who were either intoxicated, asleep, or both. The highlight of Steve's early career was producing and directing The Wizard of Oz during 8th grade recess, mostly as a way to avoid playing "animal ball" with the other boys. Though Steve deemed the production a disaster at the time, it was no worse than much of what is seen in New York today. A color photo of the cast - with Steve holding Dorothy's tiara in place - landed up on the (entire) front page of Philadelphia's Catholic Standard and Time. Upon seeing it, Steve's very Catholic mother declared her life a complete success. She warned Steve that he had likely already "peaked," since there was nothing else left to reach for. But nonetheless, he has kept reaching.
